Research
My group is developing interdisciplinarity research projects in the emerging field of immunometabolism, with a particular focus on elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the immune-mediated regulation of metabolic homeostasis in the context of obesity, MASLD-MASH, type 2 diabetes and infection. This research line is aimed to identify new molecules and/or molecular mediators involved in tissue-specific regulation of glucose/lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity that can ultimately lead to future therapeutic opportunities for the treatment of metabolic disorders and hyperinflammatory diseases. In this context, we have established a unique platform of immunometabolic phenotyping in both mouse and human blood and various metabolic organs that combines state-of-the-art ex vivo immunohistochemistry and multiomic analyses with in depth immune cell (metabolic) profiling by high-dimensional spectral flow cytometry. We have also developed a large portfolio of murine and human in vitro 2D/3D models to study the interaction between metabolic and immune cells.
Curriculum Vitae
I am a molecular biologist with a strong background in bioenergetics, cellular metabolism and immunology who is driven by the curiosity to explore the complexity of life for contributing to knowledge generation and disruptive therapeutic discoveries. After my PhD (Grenoble, France), I spent 3 years at the de Duve Institute (Brussels, Belgium) where I developed new molecular approaches for studying hepatic metabolism during development of type 2 diabetes and in response to therapeutic treatments. In 2007, I moved to the Netherlands for a second postdoc at the LUMC on a TI-Pharma-funded project aimed to investigate the use of non-conventional drugs for manipulating adipose tissue biology. From 2009 onwards, I started to establish my own research group, focusing on the role of the immune system in the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases, notably in the context of parasitic infections.
