dr. Marie-Astrid Hoogerwerf, MD

I studied medicine at the Leiden University. After obtaining my medical doctor degree in 2013 (cum laude), I worked as ANIOS Internal Medicine in the HMC. In 2015 started residency training for Internal Medicine at HMC. I had always been interested in research, and obtained a position as research-physician and later PhD-candidate in the group of Meta Roestenberg. There, I worked on the controlled human infection models for hookworm, schistosomiasis, and the GA1 malaria vaccine study. I furthermore developed an interest in the ethical aspects of CHIMs, resulting in the development of a survey instrument to document motivations and experiences of trial participants. This work resulted in my PhD-research, and in June 2024 I obtaining my PhD, cum laude, with my thesis titled “Building bridges: a multidisciplinary approach to controlled human hookworm infection”. I meanwhile completed my residency Internal Medicine and fellowship Infectious Diseases and am registered as Internist-Infectiologist since April 2025.

Currently, I combine work as a clinician at LUCID-I with research at LUCID-R. Here, I coordinate and supervise the controlled human infection trials and vaccine trials in the group of Meta Roestenberg and am LUMC scientific liaison for the InFECT-NL consortium. Within LUCID, I coordinate the LUCID Clinical Research Unit. As workpackage lead ‘controlled human infections’  and co-pillar lead ‘Clinical trials’ I coordinate the LUMC contribution to European Vaccines Hub, an EU-funded consortium securing end-to-end vaccine development for pandemic preparedness within the EU. I am furthermore expanding my own research line into ethical aspects of CHIM and participant engagement and am a member of the medical-ethical review board Leiden-Den Haag-Delft.
