Training to become a Medical Specialist
This training, which can be followed after passing the medical licensing exam, leads to registration as a medical microbiologist and lasts 5 years. The program covers all aspects of the field, including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and mycology, both at the level of laboratory diagnostics and the clinical issues of infections and their treatment. Attention is also given to hospital hygiene and public health, and there is room for independent scientific research.
The revised training plan describes all components in detail, and more information can also be obtained via the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Medische Microbiologie). Interested physicians can contact the department’s secretariat for information about the selection procedure and an introductory day.

Training to become a Medical Molecular Microbiologist
The training is based on and recognized by the Netherlands Society for Medical Microbiology, lasts 2 years, and can be followed by registered Medical Microbiological Researchers (MMO). Prof. Kroes, together with Prof. Snijder, serves as trainer for the SMBWO-recognized training program for MMO. This program is open to all PhD candidates and researchers within the field of medical microbiology.
The professional profile of an MMM consists of performing, coordinating, and implementing molecular diagnostic and molecular epidemiological research in the broadest sense of medical microbiology.
